AUSTRALIA’S beauty industry is cashing in on the flipside of the inking phenomenon by flogging unregulated tattoo removal services.

Despite calls for a consistent, national approach to industry regulation – most states in Australia have no laws to govern who can use powerful medical lasers or intense pulse light (IPL) technology for ‘cosmetic purposes’.

Health authorities in Australia have failed to keep up with the industry and it is unknown how many businesses are offering cut-price tattoo removal, with no consumer safeguards in most Australian states and territories.
